From the Montreal Mirror:
"Strung together with high spirits and the loose narrative thread of lovers lost at sea, the show is a jostle of boisterous klezmer and rock, visual art, dance and theatre. Our narrator, a Jack Sparrow with boobs, poses questions like: Will our heroes’ love run out like potable water? Will they get “scurvy of the heart?” Amateurish in a good way, the show’s best feature is its intimate, deconstructed tech; mood is implemented with flashlights, a projector provides shadow-puppetry illustrations. It gets kitschy at moments (what do you expect from a cabaret about pirate love?) but the band’s cover of the Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” and their synchronized tap dance to “Another One Bites the Dust” alone make the show well worth your while. (Cabaret Juste Pour Rire, 2111 St-Laurent)"

I really can't praise Cabaret L'Amour Fou enough. What a wonderful production. Professional quality costumes and set, extremely innovative lighting, beautiful animation done on an overhead projector, a fantastic uninhibited energy, and very committed performances by all. Being in the audience is a special experience. At first I felt the pacing was slow, but I ultimately decided that it suited the setting of a pirate ship's interminable sea voyage, and besides, I didn't want the show to end. My favourite play of 2009, in any setting, no contest.
amazing attention to detail. super committed and fun performances. awesome music. sick dancing. the complete package.
She's a SEE worthy ship indeed.
It's the next morning and I'm still reeling from this love fest.
Like any good lover, this bunch knows how to navigate the heart.
They'll dance their way into your hearts and drop anchor.
Punch you in the face then kiss you.
ARR !!!
Drop acid and spend the evening shinning flashlights on the ceiling while watching your favourite new, or old-school pirate movies. Now play an old blues record and put on episodes of Jim Henson's The Muppet Show. All this and you'll come close to the experience I had while I was in attendance for this show.
I can't hype this show up enough, nor does its artists need me to at all. Without a doubt, the people who see this show, whether they knew what they were in for or not, will, like a wild, giddy, brush fire, tell everyone they meet about the erotic, awesome dream of this show.
If you want to see a show that you'll remember forever and will let you grow old knowing that you experienced something wild, see this show, hear this show, become possessed by this show!
this is some love for the audience who was at CABARET L'AMOUR FOU! last night
a fine and salty bunch you were
salt of the earth i'd say!
i am crazy for you!!!!

" Is there a theatrical renaissance going on in Vancouver? Or is it just coincidence that two of the standout acts at Thursday night's Fringe- for-All arrived here from the rainy city? Jaws dropped when the Ancient Rugged Revival gang swarmed the stage to perform an excerpt from their madcap Cabaret l'Amour Fou! It wasn't just their terrific costumes, and the way they clowned their way into everyone's hearts by using an undulating blue sheet to create a beach scene. It was their sheer numbers.
This is the first time I've ever seen an out-of-town Fringe Festival show featuring 12 performers.
Again, it's the math of the situation. That's a lot of people to stuff into a van for a cross-country trip. Not to mention food and lodging.
How did they do it? "We decided to pay for our own plane tickets," said one kittenish performer, who identified herself as Candice R. Curly Paws, estimating the cost at about $500 apiece. "We're looking at it as professional performance development intensive. Those workshops cost a lot of money." This isn't just a troupe; it's a savvy collective of professional cabaret performers with their own separate acts. It sounds very much like the Cirque du Soleil circa 1984.
"A number of small collectives have come together to form a larger group, the Ancient Rugged Revival," explained performer Basil McMahon. The idea being to contribute one's art to a larger project. (One morning they'll wake up and find they've morphed into a multi-national corporation, I warned them, having seen it happen before.) When the Ancient Rugged Revival failed to get accepted into the rest of the Canadian Fringe circuit, they just booked their own West Coast itinerary for the summer.
Who directed the show? "We collectively direct," Paws replied. "It's a process." Their Cabaret l'Amour Fou involves sea songs, shadow puppets, mock snorkelling, tap dancing - a mixture of the naughty and the nautical.
Cabaret l'Amour Fou plays tomorrow at 11 p.m at the Just for Laughs Cabaret, 2111 St. Laurent Blvd, then Wednesday at 9:45 p.m., Thursday at 8:15 p.m., Friday at 3:15 p.m. and Saturday at 8:15 p.m."
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
