Fantasy, voyeurism, love, and lust drive four separate lives to find each other within the hazy realms of modern romance. Solid performances all round...my only gripe is that I didn't like the narrative being used to preview the pending conflict...just jump into it! I also would have liked to see/feel something juicy during the discussion between husband and wife over their guest. What are the stakes for their relationship? Is there layered hope that it will bring them closer together...just felt the stakes could be higher.

Penumbra: Brilliant

Everything about penumbra is just right. The writing is sharp, stylish and utterly believable. Paul Van Dyck's direction brilliantly highlights the way the characters' lives and stories overlap, intersect, collide. Even the lighting is great; focussing the audience's attention on a tiny gesture, a lingering look -- without ever drawing undue attention to itself. There isn't a weak moment in the action, and not a weak link in the cast (though, for me, Michelle Boback was particularly riveting).

Rarely does a show that's this sexy go to the trouble of being so smart, or so achingly truthful. Please do not miss this show. Go with someone you care about, and hold them very tight afterward.

my heart still hurts, the morning after

Penumbra was gorgeous: gorgeous writing, stage direction, acting. A very satisfying twist at the end. Satisfying in that I felt like my heart had broken a little. And when I got out of the theatre I really wanted to find my lover and squeeze him as hard as I could, to convince myself that none of the pain in the play would befall the two of us. But he's out of town, so I had my own thoughts to wrestle with. And this morning I still feel a little off-kilter and I am just so impressed with the production. But go with someone, or have someone ready to take your phone call after.

Slow on the uptake (I guess)... but finally found where to write a comment.
IF you haven't... take advantage of this first run of this new work.
I can't encourage people enough to go and see this play.
Tight- taut- thought-provoking (to say the least)... The writing is incredible- and the directing and acting came together to create an experience for everyone in that room.
Intense- without hitting me over the head.
I'm at a loss for words.. So- Do yourself a favor- and see this play.
Here's hoping we see it somewhere else for a long run.
Bravo!

I've got little doubt that we'll see this play in another venue- in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver...
New playwright.... and gifted. I'd say we'll be hearing much more from and about Katharine Dempsey.
The direction was inspired... The actors delivered...
But- without the material to begin with- We wouldn't have seen what we saw.
It was an experience that left the us talking and thinking long after we left... through today, in fact.
I'm going again tonight. It's been sold out two nights in a row- so.. good to get tickets now. You won't regret it.

Met my expectations

Everything about this play is done right: set design, acting, script, lighting, music, etc... Even though I never experienced any of what the characters did, I sank right into their dark corners, in the "penumbra". Besides the age restriction, I highly recommend this show. I'm glad I got my ticket before it sold out! A must-see at all costs!

No words can truly express how good this show is, but I'll give it a shot. I can easily say this is the best piece of English theatre I have seen in Montreal. The four person cast delivers an incredible performance, and with the writing of Katherine Dempsey combined with the direction of Paul Van Dyck it is an absolute must see! I cannot stress how good this show is, I cannot wait to see Katherine's next play!
seriously, go see this.
now.
