Catherine Montgomery made me cry on a warm, Saturday afternoon, and I admit I welled-up more than once. This wasn’t until quite a fair bit into the piece, and I don’t think Ms Montgomery would even expect these particular parts would evoke such reaction, but her honesty, bravery and completely beautiful openness did just that.
Though a one-person show, this is a team with much training in their respective fields; especially obvious is Montgomery’s One Yellow Rabbit intensive.
In the character of Tracy Morgan, we are gently and poetically eased in. Before we have come full circle and tenderly returned to our roots, Tracy becomes the tough yet vulnerable rock chick/waitress/stripper; the transfixing, self-gratifying child who is so aware of what love is and how it is now manifesting itself in her feelings for the green-eyed girl; and the pragmatic if not slightly disorganized lover who is doing it just for conception. And all this while trying to keep it together to stave off mother’s frequent emotional overloads.
Catherine Montgomery deals with death and love and trying to get back to safety, “Letting go is an art”, she says. Ms Montgomery is an artist- always in the moment and a joy to watch. This is what Fringe is all about.
