Change of pace

The Fringe is usually comedy-heavy so a drama like Tuning Venus was a nice change of pace. It's well-produced, has a nice set and interesting dialogue but on the whole, I needed more incentive to sympathize with the Southern Belle. The character seemed inconsistent and some of the set-ups did not seem to lead anywhere, although the actress is beautiful to watch.

I did love the piano tuner though. Granted, he looked nothing like the poster but don't let that deter you. He walks in all awkward laughs and stolen looks and before you know it, he's become one sexy motherfucker. A fine and subtle performance.

The Woman in Red Rules!

Well, not totally. The guy playing Mr. M in Tuning Venus is also a great actor, and he somehow manages to lure our eyes away from Mrs. ...and trust me, that isn't an easy thing to pull off.

The first time I saw Tuning Venus, I didn't know what to expect. The fancy poster advertising the show caught my attention, and I wanted to see with my own eyes what two people and a handful of props can do to an audience. I wasn't dissapointed.

The experience is so unusual and interesting, that I just had to watch Tuning Venus a second time!

I went to see the June 18th performance.
Impressive! A very good story that kept me entertained from beginning to end. Missus and Jack are two must see characters! Although I must say the person in charge of there lights and sound seemed a little too high strung. It's the Fringe, just have FUN!
Overall, one of my top picks of the Festival!!!!

The poster is what drew my friend and I into going to see this play last night. Beautiful photography.
Tuning Venus took us on quite the twisted journey into the mind of a seemingly bored housewife who makes a piano tuner her next unknowing seduction target. I loved the quiet desperation in the main characters comportment and thought the slightly weary piano tuner played off her somewhat crazy character very well. Wonderful and insightful writing (I think the playwright is also the main actress - Gorgeous girl).
It was definitely a work of art and I highly recommend a viewing.

Brilliant play, this is a must see...Mrs., the southern belle from Ontario, sucks you into her disturbing and fantastical world while she needingly manipulates her innocent bystander, the lonely traveling piano tuner. For this hour and a half one act play I was mezmorized by the portrayal of two such unlike characters playing with each other. Should he or shouldn't he? Will she or won't she? A cross between STreetcar and Salesman , you just don't see well written pieces like this anymore...don't miss it!!

I want her to be happy. I want her to be healed. I want her to stop prancing around. Now I want her to quit stalling and just kiss him. I want her to manipulate, to get what she wants. I want her to crush him, because someone crushed her. I want them to devour each other. I want him to run away. I want them to stop, I am getting uncomfortable, this is a bit too familiar. Did that actually happen or is she just crazy? That's sick. People aren't like that. I'm not like that. That's twisted. That's too far-fetched, it's too real. I'm trapped. I'm afraid. I don't want to think anymore.

Those were my thoughts while watching, what are yours?

Completely worth your time

TUNING VENUS, a one-act play staring Amy Lee Lavioe & Michael Broadhurst, thoughtfully breathes life into the world of a strange and emotionally fragile young housewife who spends an afternoon desperately clinging to 'acting the part' with her most recently summoned visitor; the traveling piano tuner - who really has no idea what he is in for.

I loved this play.

I found myself quickly sucked into Mrs. intimate web of scheming deception and little word deaths as she longingly attempts to build a better mouse-trap for her man of the hour.

Amy Lee's performance is as spellbinding and flawless as the play itself. This is the first I've seen of Michael Broadhurst, who matched her energy and commanded the stage in his own right.

It's intriguing, it's compelling, it's funny, it's sexy and it's completely worth your time.

daring and defiant acting- brilliant and dashing execution. But

Intense acting which wears a ton of preparation and rehearsal very lightly and naturally. Thoughtfully directed, with unobstrusive and simple blocking, props, sound, etc.. But the script is flawed. In particular,

the character of Mrs. is underdeveloped: I didn't get the sense of any arc or change in her, however subtle. She discloses that she is the way she is due to a particular life experience, yet nothing deeper is done with this, which ultimately makes it feel like a gimmick (just like a spousal abuse interpretation is raised on one side and just as easily cast away). It would also be interesting to have a more subtle impression of how Mr M is changed by the experience, than some sort of on/ off switch.

Great cast playing great characters. An appropriately warm venue. One act of squirming, sexy discomfort and genuine laughs that only clear part of the tension. And you'll feel the tension. Go see it with a friend, you'll want someone to talk to afterward.

Went to see Tuning Venus Saturday afternoon and was amazed by this young cast's professional acting abilities. Under the brilliant direction of Mr. Greg Tuck, Amy Lee Lavoie and Michael Broadhurst create an amazing chemistry on stage and flawlessly draw their audience into the dark world held within the "Mrs" apartment. The audience is taken on an amazing journey as we slowly unravel the layers to find out why the character "Mrs" was initially yearning for Jack's arrival. Bravo, a must see during this Fringe Festival!
