My Pregnant Brother

My Pregnant Brother

A Nutter Show (Montréal, QC)
Theatre/Théâtre · English/Anglais · 45min. · Public: 13 ans/years

On the day this Fringe show opens, the world’s first pregnant man is due to give birth to his second child. But, you see, that’s not quite right, because he wasn’t the first. Just over three years ago, I wheeled my pregnant brother into the operating room and helped him deliver my niece into this world. This is the true (and not quite so Oprah-ready) story of that journey.

I was completely drawn in by the 2nd sentence of My Pregnant Brother, written and performed by Montreal's own Johanna Nutter. Tears laughter, more tears more laughter... intelligent but not intellectualized, genuine but not imposing, raw but full of subtleties: Johanne Nutter's script is a rare find in its generosity. A great story well told and performed to perfection by the very talented Johanne Nutter.
It's a story about her sister who becomes her brother. It is about her mother's inability to adapt, defeated by the marginality (loss) of her second daughter despite her own life lived on the fringe as a a veritable hippie and a single mom. But mostly, it is about Johanne and her role in it all, her struggle to get out from under, intact. A personal and compelling story that manages to shed light on the fragility and complexity of gender and family as societal constructs.

I saw My Pregnant Brother on what I will call my homerun evening of Fringe theatre. I can't say enough about this play and I'm not sure words can do justice to what I witnessed. Such raw honesty told with wit, charm and beauty. This show lays bare truths of the family dynamic that go far beyond the extraordinary circumstances around her brother giving birth to a child. It shows love in it's myriad forms and what we will and won't do for love. Thank you Johanna for your wonderful show.

A beautiful exploration... a painful, funny and deeply honest account of a woman's life with her family.
Johanna Nutter is a true professional actress with real skill and talent, her text is shockingly raw, honest and charming, and Jeremy Taylor's direction is subtle, unpretentious and lovely - very rare skills for a young director. The live music, which changes with each performance, is a stunning companion to this piece which gives the impression that it could be as changeable as the mood of the performer - it lives and breathes. Bravo to all involved.

My Pregnant Brother is beautifully fertile

Johanna Nutter’s beautifully crafted, compelling play takes place in the Fringeland Plateau (iconically chalk-drawn before our eyes) but couldn’t be more out there. She tells the true story of her brother, who used to be her sister, his pregnancy (from an encounter with a blue-eyed squeegee kid) and the birth of her niece. Never making the audience uncomfortable, Johanna charmingly leads us along- a Plateau girl raised by super single hippiemom, dragged all over the country, sometimes sleeping in trucks, carrying more responsibility than any child should and being the rock of the family. Never bitter or resentful, we are with her every step of the way, often with a laugh.
With the merest posture change we get to know her mother, folding in on herself like a turtle and her brother with his loping, noncommittal, “hey”.
But underneath the topical fascination is a story about family bonds, growth, acceptance and all the things that make life hard but so worth living. This is a fertile play, in all senses of the word. Subtly played live guitar underscores and enhances the piece.
Kudos to Johanna and dramaturg/director Jeremy Taylor (The Beekeepers, King of Fifteen Island).

Go see “My Pregnant Brother” because it’s a totally engrossing story told with searing honesty. Despite the unusual subject matter, it deals with universal themes of love, loss and defining ourselves and our relationships. Check out the ingenious use of chalk to map this fabulous world and define the borders and boundaries that are so important to the story.
